Google Cardboard was a pioneering virtual reality (VR) platform developed by Google. Launched in 2014, it aimed to make VR accessible to a wide audience by offering a low-cost and easy-to-use solution.
The Cardboard Design
The name itself is a giveaway - Google Cardboard viewers were literally made of cardboard. Users could either build their own from readily available materials following Google's specifications, or purchase pre-made viewers. These viewers consisted of a fold-out cardboard housing with a pair of biconvex lenses and a simple method to secure a smartphone in place.
How it Worked
The magic happened through smartphone compatibility. Cardboard relied on users' existing smartphones to generate the VR experience. Cardboard-compatible apps would split the phone's display into a stereoscopic image, one for each eye. The lenses in the viewer would then correct the distortion caused by this process, creating a 3D image with a wide field of view. Some early versions even included magnets as input buttons, but these relied on the phone having a compass sensor.
